WE SPEND THE REST OF the day moving and mapping out the new courses of the three UUVs. We talked for hours, admittedly flirting a lot and exchanging touches here and there, filled with innuendo.

After much encouragement, Jack opens up about the death of his parents in a car crash when he was four and how he doesn’t really remember them. It was just him and his younger sister now. She was married with two kids, his niece and nephew, and they were spending Christmas in Europe this year with her husband’s family. It was partly the reason why he was spending Christmas alone, here on the island with his friends.

By the end of the day I was exhausted. It was a great day on the water and once back on the beach Jack stops me from leaving and hands me a gift.

“It’s beautiful!” I breathe. In my hand is a brilliantly colored abalone shell on a simple metal chain. “Where did you get it?”

“I found it the first day we went diving. You know... the day you were angry at me.” He shrugs. “Seems appropriate you should have it.”

“Wow. I haven’t been scuba diving in a long time. I hear the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most beautiful places to dive.”

“You scuba dive?” Jack looks excited.

“Duh, of course I do. I’m a marine biologist remember? I’m just a bit rusty is all.”

He laughs. “Is it safe for you to dive? I mean you are the most accident-prone marine biologist I know.”

“Oh ha ha ha. Laugh it up. I’m probably the only marine biologist you know.”

He nods, agreeing, “You have me there.”

“Seriously though, thank you for saving my life.....again.”

“My pleasure Miss Harley.” He reaches out and takes the chain from my hand and puts it over my head. The shell, a bit smaller than the palm of my hand, sparkles in the fading light of the sun.

I sigh, not wanting the day to end. “Thank you for my shell.”

“I wouldn’t want to give it to anyone else. It’s small and beautiful... just like you,” and with that, he gives me a light kiss on the lips and puts his arm around me as we watch the sun set below the horizon...
